Q&A: how is my diet for cutting?

Question by Brenton: how is my diet for cutting?
I eat similar to this every single day and I never ‘cheat’, I dont see any reason to do something that puts me further from my goals, which are to get a low body fat percentage and six pack abs, I also Did some Resistance Training followed by High Intensity Interval training training. I also drink water throughout the day (I definately get atleast 10 8 fl oz and more). How does my diet look

6:30 – Quaker Instant original Oatmeal with 1/2 scoop of protein powder (Pure Protein Cookies and cream) With Skim Milk and 1/2 of a banana.

9:20 – 3 celery sticks
bowl of green grapes
3 egg whites
15 almonds

12:10 – 6 Slices of all natural turkey rolled with fat free cheddar cheese and mustard (like a sandwich without bread)

2:30 – 3/4 Cup of A protein shake made with Ice, Skim Milk, Pure protein powder cookies and cream, and strawberries.
Serving of Asparagus

3:50 – 4:32 – My workout (Resistance and swimming intervals)

5:30 – Serving of Brocolli
2 Grilled Chicken Breasts with Mustard

Later tonight – 7:30 -
Serving of Fat free cottage cheese
salad (Dole Field Greens) With Balsamic vinegar
I forgot to mention I take a flex seed pill and green tea drink for my first meal aswell
to the second poster im not sure if you saw it but along with nuts everyday I also take flaxseed in the morning, I usually put extra virgin olive oil on my salad but put shrimp on it instead.

very good diet….many people think cutting means getting rid of calories per day….wrong….you have 6 meals spread throughout the day (increasing your metabolism) and your diet contains many healthy choices. good choice on oatmeal in the morning….contains complex carbs which will spur your metabolism for the day and give you plenty of energy…bravo! good diet

This is a pretty decent diet. The only thing I see missing is fats; there doesn’t seem to be any fats (aside from the almonds) and that is an essential macronutrient. You should be getting at least 20% of your daily caloric intake from fats. Maybe you could add a couple of whole eggs with your egg whites, add some olive oil with your salad and maybe some flax seed oil with a protein shake or cottage cheese. Also, I’d replace the instant oatmeal with whole oats instead (take a look at the ingredients of instant oatmeal, it’s pretty processed compared to regular whole oats or even quick oats).

The other thing is it doesn’t look like you get anything after 7:30 or so? I’d suggest a serving of a blended or casein protein powder, or a serving of cottage cheese before bedtime. This will give you needed protein during your primary recovery time and will cut down on the catabolic effects of sleep.

Otherwise, pretty dang good. Lots of fiber, veggies and fruit, good sources of protein. Just need some more fats. Are you trying to cut as in cut for a competition, or cut as in cutting calories?
